Wildfires 300 Acres and Great in LA County (2000 - 2018). Data from 2017 and 2018 is approximated from several sources, as CalFire has not yet released full reports for these years.
• Fire perimeter polygon data describes wildfire history from CAL FIRE (including timber fires 10 acres or greater, brush fires 30 acres and greater, and grass fires 300 acres or greater) and US Forest Service (10-acre minimum for fires since 1950). The fire perimeters dataset contains separate polygons for each burn occurrence. The dataset is updated periodically.
• Fire frequency data for 2000-2016 was sourced from CalFire annual reports. CalFire data for 2017 and 2018 was compiled using their ongoing reporting of large fires that can be manually inputted from their website.
• Fire hazard polygons are part of the California Fire Hazard Severity Zone Map Update Project. The “Very High” fire hazard layer in the digital Atlas can be accessed online, however the degrees of severity requires a separate analysis conducted by Dr. Tom Gillespie’s lab. This data will be publicly available through the biodiversity atlas and will be updated annually. However, because this analysis has not been published yet, the spatial data files are not available as of April 2019.
